Story Behind the Book – How to Be a Bible Princess

How to Be a Bible Princess by Catherine MacKenzieI have six nieces and over the years I’ve bought birthday presents and Christmas gifts for them as well as other little nick-nacks from corner shops or supermarkets. It didn’t take me long to cotton onto the fact that the girls liked pastels and pinks. So for one birthday I bought my little niece Lois a pink cuddly throw. Her father asked me ‘How many flamingos did you have to kill in order to make that?’ So you get the picture – Pink is the thing. Princesses are also a favourite with the younger nieces. I suppose it was realising what my nieces liked that made me think about the wonderful stories in the bible that feature princesses. That sparked the idea that I should really write a book about them. Dale Ralph Davis had also done a sermon on Jehosheba – The Woman who Saved Christmas so with that story in mind I made a start. The completed book has the story of Pharaoh’s Daughter; Abigail Esther and The Queen of the South as well as Michal; Jezebel and Herodias’ Daughter. All these stories in the bible of the good and the bad princesses have something valuable to teach young girls – the women of the next generation. If I was to sum up what the book really teaches it would be – God doesn’t care about whether you’ve got a crown on your head or a tiara in your cupboard. It’s not about if you’re a princess – it’s about whether you’re a child of God and part of the true Heavenly royal family.

Story Behind the Book – Jesus Rose from the Dead: The Evidence

Jesus Rose From the Dead - the Evidence by Catherine MacKenzieWhen I wrote Jesus Rose from the Dead: the Evidence I found it amazing to go through the proofs for the resurrection. There was so much truth there; I felt as if I could actually stand up in a court room and make a good case for the defense. “Yes the resurrection did happen.”

I had quite a few conversations with my parents as I grappled with the various issues. My mother who has considerable experience of the court room through her position as Justice of the Peace was a great help.
She talked about the many cases she’d been involved with over her years on ‘the bench’ and how you could often tell when someone was telling the truth or not.

One clear indication that someone was making it all up was if their story and the story of several witnesses were exactly the same… and I mean exactly. From the very first sentence to the very last detail Mr X tells the same story as Miss Y and then Mrs B says exactly the same as well. ‘That should make you suspicious,’ my mum declared.

I remember saying, ‘Really?’ Mum replied, ‘Yes. You see people never remember the same incident in exactly the same way. Everyone witnesses an incident from a different position or angle. So when you hear several people giving exactly the same evidence that makes you stop and think – ‘These people have worked out exactly what they’re going to say and they’re all hiding something.’

It was good to get this information directly from someone who knew what she was talking about.
You see one of the complaints from unbelievers regarding the resurrection and the gospels as a whole is that the gospel writers wrote things differently; they mentioned different stories, they shared different facts. So some people look at this and say – ‘The bible has contradictions so we shouldn’t believe it. We shouldn’t believe that Jesus rose from the dead.’

But the experts in human behaviour and the law say otherwise. Because each of the writers share different facts and ‘appear’ to be contradicting each other actually proves the opposite. These stories are more likely to be true because of the fact that they are slightly different. Each of the writers wrote slightly differently because they remembered things differently, but one person’s version of events doesn’t mean that another person’s version is wrong. Each of the writers had a different readership so the points they focused on were different too. Each writer wanted to emphasise a particular point or topic so that’s also why their focus was different.

Having this amazing piece of information as one of my first building blocks I felt more confident about going on to writing about the other evidences for the resurrection. There are all the eye-witness accounts. It’s amazing when we realise how so many people actually saw Jesus risen from the dead. There’s the fact that it was Roman Soldiers who actually determined if Jesus was dead or not – now Roman Soldiers were experts at killing people. There is no way they’d make a mistake about that. And then there are all the amazing prophecies written hundreds of years before Jesus was even born – and a lot of them came true within 24 hours of Jesus death. There are in fact 60 prophecies in the Old Testament that Jesus himself fulfils.

I think I can say with certainty that this was a book that I found hard to write. It was different to what I’d written before, it was a more factual book for a start. I knew I had to write it in a different style and I wasn’t exactly sure how to start it or how to finish it. But over time I managed to get something together, I put in fact files and tasks and loads of scripture verses. I hope what I have written will prove to you the facts of the resurrection – but also that Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners. Two amazing truths that you as a sinner can’t afford to ignore and that a Christian can take great encouragement from.

Story Behind the Book – CF4K’s First Book

Did you know that books have their own stories? Well they do. A book just doesn’t make itself. Lots of people are involved and it can be quite a tricky process. Today I’m going to tell you the story behind one of the first books Christian Focus Publications ever published. I’m going to give you the short version of it – one of these days I might give you the longer version. But here we go…

My Dad and Mum couldn’t find children’s bible stories in the shops… at least they couldn’t find ones that told the bible story in the way the bible told it. They didn’t like the pictures much either. Dad told Mum to write some. She did. She wrote Gideon – the Soldier of God and Mary – the Mother of Jesus. Because she was a very busy lady Mum had to work out how to find time to write and amuse her two year old girl at the same time. So what she did was get a basin of water, a notepad and pen. She let the little girl play with the water and she sat down to write. An hour later she had her first children’s book – and one very wet little toddler. After that there were many other books – 150 to be precise. But that’s all I have time for for now…you’ll have to wait for another post to find out about book 150!
