About the Book:
On January 8, 1956, Nate Saint and some other missionaries flew to an area near an Auca village and landed on a strip of sand that they had named Palm Beach. This was Nate’s final flight for he and four other missionaries on the plane that day were martyred when tribesmen attacked them with spears a few days later.

Although this was Nate’s last flight – it wasn’t the end of his work. What he and the other martyred missionaries had done for the Kingdom of God convicted many to listen to God’s call to mission. And the work of evangelism continued to the Aucas too. Many in that village came to accept Christ including several of the men who had thrown their spears on that terrible day.

Brian Cosby Interviewed on ReformedCast

Christian Focus 4 Kids author Brian Cosby made a return appearance on Scott Oakland’s ReformedCast to discuss his book Rebels Rescued: A Student’s Guide to Reformed Theology. That episode is available for download here:  LINK.

About the Book:
Have you ever had a shopping cart with a broken wheel? You push it around and all it wants to do is run into the sides of the aisle. If you were to let the cart go on its own, it would immediately turn and smash into that case of pickles up ahead! You are like that shopping cart! The bad wheel is your heart. It’s always veering off, leading you away from what you were created to be. You were created for God’s love and glory, but instead, your heart pulls you away from Jesus and into something much worse than a case of pickles. Being a rebel at heart means that you do not have the ability to choose God or even to respond to God on your own because you are spiritually dead; we all are. Reformed theology teaches that, because we are more sinful than we could ever imagine, it can only be God who takes that broken shopping cart wheel (our sinful heart) and replaces it with one that has both the ability and the desire to seek him and to follow him. By faith in Christ, you are no longer set to smash into the aisles of sinful destruction. No, he promises to carry us in his grip of grace.

God’s Good Design: An Interview with Krista Horning on Homeschool Heartbeat

Christian Focus author Krista Horning was interviewed this week on the Homschool Heartbeat Radio Program. The interview is now available at HSLDA.org.

Just the Way I Am: God's Good Design in Disability by Krista HorningAbout the Book:
“For the people in this book, the sovereignty and goodness of God have become a sanctuary for the soul in a life they did not expect to live. When they affirm the goodness and wisdom of God in creating them for short-term disability and eternal super-ability, they do not do so without tears. There is no glib trifling with pain. They are learning the paradox of “sorrowful yet always rejoicing.” They are learning how to be brought low and how to abound. They believe that in this fallen age, God’s loved ones groan along with the whole creation, waiting for the fullness of adoption, the redemption of their bodies.

They find more hope in God’s unsearchable wisdom and power and purpose than in the vagaries of natural processes or the assaults of Satan. They believe that God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for their complete renewal-spiritually and physically. This healing is as sure as Jesus is precious-infinitely precious. It is only a matter of time, a vapor’s breath, and they will be whole. Because of the grace of God, these lives and this book exist for the glory of God.”
-John Piper

Interview with Mindy Withrow – Author of The History Lives Series

Mindy WithrowThe History Lives series by Mindy and Brandon Withrow recently became available as a box set. In honor of the momentous occasion, we wanted to share a brief interview we conducted with Mindy.

Q:  How did you get started in writing?
A:  I discovered a love of words in early childhood. Since then, writing has been my primary method of exploring what I think, sorting out ideas as I put them on paper. I wrote short stories in high school, newspaper articles in college and now write professionally as a book author, book reviewer, blogger, and copy writer for a digital agency.

Q:  Why did you and Brandon feel compelled to write the History Lives series.
A:  We both grew up in the church but didn’t discover much about Christian history until college. Then we learned that the history of Christianity is a complex story, full of politics and personal ambition and bloodshed. It’s hard to tell a nuanced story like that to kids–but we wanted to try, if only for our nieces and nephews (we have 17 now!). We found that stories about “heroes” make it seem like those who came before us were better than us, stronger or smarter or more committed, and that’s not true. They were just people trying to do the right thing based on the information they had, but often not knowing what the right thing was and sometimes screwing everything up. So we wanted to tell their stories from their perspectives as real people and not heroes, and do it in a way that captured kids’ imaginations. We started in the ancient church and the rest of the History Lives series flowed from there.

Q:  Is there a specific period of or “character” from church history that stands out as your favorite?
A:  I can’t say that any one period or person stands out, probably because there is something in each of them that I appreciate or relate to. The ancient church is endlessly fascinating because life in those days was just so completely different from the modern world. The Middle Ages was dark with war even as the light of education was beginning to dawn in the universities. The modern era finally sees a social shift against slavery and toward the full personhood of women. I’m grateful for the lessons of each one but so glad to live in the time that I do!

Thank you Mindy for this brief interview. For more information about Mindy and her writing, visit her website at www.MindyWithrow.com. You can also follow Mindy on Twitter (@mindywithrow) and Facebook.
