John Stott : The Humble Leader by Julia Cameron

Start Here

John Stott had friends all over the world. In April 2005, his name appeared in the American magazine TIME, and it took everyone by surprise. Picture a group of his friends in an airport or a railway station in London, or Sydney or Singapore or Nairobi. One of them has just bought a copy of TIME from the news stand. This is what you might have heard: ‘Look at this! Uncle John’s here!’ ‘Where?’ ‘Here in TIME.’ He’s listed as one of the ‘100 most influential people in the world’! ‘Let’s see!’ ‘Yes, there he is – with Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey’. ‘Did you know his father handed him some cyanide when he was about six?’ ‘What??!’

‘Truly, he did. Uncle John told me! It could have killed him!’ ‘I remember someone saying he became a tramp in London.’ ‘A tramp? I thought he was a Chaplain to the Queen.’ ‘Did you hear how he went to Sunday School with daggers down his socks? Dressed to kill, you could say!’ They all laughed. ‘Just think, if people used all the titles they were given, Uncle John would be called The Revd Dr Dr Dr Dr Dr Dr John Stott CBE. He received six doctorates.’ And so they shared their stories, and they laughed out loud, as some stories were very funny. When you reach the end of this book, you will know quite a lot about John Stott. You will see why he was in the ‘Top 100’ list of influential people. He was driven by a passion for Jesus Christ’s name to be honoured around the world. As you learn more about him, you may begin to think of him as ‘Uncle John’ – he liked to be called that by people who got to know him. We have packed all we can into these pages, but there is much more to tell. To delve further, you will find a list of things you can do on page 150.

Hebrews 13: 7 says ‘Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.’ John Stott has given towering leadership in a very humble way. Let’s ‘consider the outcome of his way of life’. You too can then ‘imitate his faith’ if you find his life story inspiring. You can post comments on the publisher’s website at www.christianfocus.com.
